With just one athlete representing an entire country, the pressure really was on for Tuvalu.
Their 24 year-old sprinter is also a professional footballer in the Tuvalu A-Division and he took part in the men’s 100m sprint. Of course – being the only representative of his country – he proudly carried his nation’s flag during the Opening Ceremony, too.
He finished 21st out of the 86 athletes competing in his event, which is no small feat bearing in mind Tuvalu is the smallest delegation to travel to Rio out of the 200 competing nations. In fact, their entire population could fit into a couple of sections of the arena stands.
Other nations with only two competitors include Bhutan, Chad, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Mauritania, Nauru, Somalia and Swaziland. Our congratulations go to them all.
