K is for… Knockout

For the first time ever, the amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) has voted in favour of allowing professional fighters to compete, starting in Brazil. The move caused widespread controversy between both amateur and professional boxers who feared the change would deny amateurs the chance to compete fairly against other up and coming fighters on the world stage.

However, fears proved to be unfounded: of the three pro fighters competing in Rio, all were swiftly knocked out by amateurs – two of them in the first heat of preliminaries, one in the second.

The road is now open for amateurs to slug it out with other young hopefuls in the climax of the competition.
