350,000 condoms, 100,000 femidoms and 175,000 sachets of lubricant have been distributed in the Athletes’ Village – that’s 42 condoms for each competitor taking part and three times more than the number distributed in London for 2012. It’s safe to say the organisers in Rio were playing it safe when planning for this year’s games.
And can you blame them? These athletes are essentially living on a student campus, they’re at their peak physical condition, they’ve spent months locked away in training and have now been thrust into what’s probably the greatest gene pool on the planet. On top of all that, Rio has got to be one of the sexiest cities in the world.
So, with the fear of Zika and the undoubtable victory celebrations following the games, it’s crucial that there is sufficient control and protection for all the competitors.
We doff our caps to the organisers.
